A SHORT time later Torin returned with another tray but left it outside the cell. The force field dropped and the lights flickered. Torin frowned at the overhead lights, and muttering under his breath, started cleaning Dayo’s cell. Dayo stayed on the berth.

After Torin finished, he shoved the tray inside the cell and reactivated the shield immediately. Torin didn’t speak, and neither did Dayo, but he did notice Torin’s frown when the lights flickered. Interesting.

Dayo picked the tray off the floor and sat on his berth. He uncovered the food and sighed. The meal was simplistic, but he ate it. Fortunately it was filling. Since he had no way to tell time—they removed his comm, of course—Dayo tried not to dwell on upcoming events.

Several long unit hours later, Zeyd woke. Thanks to the force field, Dayo couldn’t hear what he yelled. Zeyd’s cell must have some sort of silencing mechanism. Instead he ignored Zeyd. Instead, he focused on his growling stomach. Not long after, Torin returned and informed him this would be his last meal until tomorrow. Not once did he glance at Zeyd.

Eventually the lights were lowered, and Dayo try to get comfortable on the hard berth. Numerous times during the night he woke up, sweating and breathing hard. Images haunted his dreams, but once awake, he couldn’t remember what they were.

The next morning was more of the same. Torin brought food for only Dayo and ignored Zeyd. More time passed. Dayo wasn’t used to the lack of activity and was quickly going crazy. He was pacing his cell when an abrupt beep sounded. Startled, Dayo turned. There was a green light above the shower and objects fell from the ceiling.

Unsure of what was happening, he approached and hesitantly picked up the items. It resembled soap and shampoo. Dayo barely stepped out of the way before water gushed out of the shower. Dayo didn’t waste time. He unbraided his hair, stripped, and stepped under the spray. It was only lukewarm but better than nothing.

He washed his hair first then his body. Unsure of how long he’d have the luxury, he hurried. The green light above the shower began to blink, and Dayo had a feeling his time was running out. He barely finished rinsing the soap off of him before the water cut off. Since there wasn’t shelves in the shower, he left the soap and shampoo on the floor.

Now what? He was soaking wet. Surely they didn’t intend to leave him like this, but it wouldn’t surprise him. Dayo stared up at the blinking green light when another hole appeared above the shower and a towel fluttered down.

The hole closed, and the light went red. A few moments after that, the light disappeared too. Dayo quickly dried off, and wrinkling his nose, redress in his dirty and grass-stained uniform. Unsure what to do with the damp towel, he draped it across the sink so it would dry. More time passed then Torin returned… with Belton.

Dayo’s stomach knotted. Now what? Belton ignored Dayo and walked to Zeyd’s cell.
